Most Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the dates and hours of camp in 2012? Session one June 25th- July 6th Session two July 16th- 27th 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
- How do I register? Forms may be downloaded from this website on the "become a Lucky Dog" page. Your child's space will be reserved when payment in full is received. All forms must be completed prior to the first day of camp.
- What type of medical forms need to be completed? To register for camp, parents are required to fill out a simple health history form that also includes a parent authorization form .Please note this form does NOT need to be completed by a physician. An addition, please include an Immunization Record which can be faxed to 609-737-3116 or email as a PDF to melitawright@gmail.com.
- Is lunch and snack served during the day? Camp does not provide lunch. Please pack lunch in an insulated lunch bag. We do provide a snack and drinks all day.
- What do you do in extreme heat? The counselors are trained in recognizing symptoms of overheating. The campers are encouraged drink water frequently from the reusable water bottle that camp provides. We adjust our activities according to the weather. In extreme heat we can cool off in sprinklers, play on slip n' slide, play in the shaded area of Stony Brook, We might have a water balloon fight or bob for apples. Its amazing what creative games the kids come up with when there is no pool! The children soon learn that tress are natures air conditioners!
- Is there a camp out? There is an OPTIONAL camp out on the last Friday night of each session.
- What should my child bring to camp? Each day the children should bring a lunch, an extra change of clothes, a bathing suit, towel and shoes appropriate for playing in Stony Brook. Children should wear play clothes and shoes for active play. No sandals. All belongings should come to camp packed in a large backpack. Please label everything. Your child should be encouraged to help pack so that they can recognize their belongings at camp. Siblings should each have their own backpacks.
- What do you do in case of rain? Camp operates rain or shine! As long as there is no lightning and thunder , we play in the rain! Art is indoors so that is not effected. Nature is usually walks in the woods and playing in Stony Brook so the rain doesn't stop that. Summer rains provide unique experiences for the children and a great way for the kids to cool down in the the hot New Jersey summers!
- What is the camper to staff ratio? The appeal of Lucky Dog is that is small and intimate. There are only 40 campers. The campers are split into 3 groups of 12-15 campers. In each group there are 2 counselors and a CIT. There is an additional counselor at each activity. So it is safe to say that our ratio is 3:1. All counselors are over 16 and all groups are overseen by the camp director.
- Do you camp offer before or after camp extended care? The camp does not provide extended care but many of the counselors would be willing to earn a little extra money. This can be arranged through the director.
- What is your refund policy? There is a NO REFUND POLICY unless another camper from the waiting list can fill the vacancy. There is a $100 processing fee for the cancellation.
- Do the kids ride the horses? There is no horseback riding at camp.
- Will there be swimming at camp? There is no swimming. While the children explore Stony Brook, they do not submerge their heads and are not permitted to swim as per camp rules (unfortunately, the creek is only just a trickle during the hot New Jersey summers)
- What do you do about poison Ivy and ticks? The walks are on paths that are free of poison ivy but kids are kids and sometimes we can't protect them from all that nature has to offer! The children are outside, which is the habitat for ticks and poison ivy. At the end of each nature walk the children wash their exposed body parts with soap and water. I would suggest a body check at the end of the day for ticks.
- Do you supply insect repellant or sunscreen? NO if you want your child to use either, please apply it before camp or send it with your child (labeled with their name) and instruct them how to apply it. Be sure to mention it to their counselor.
